“3차전에서 끝냈어야 했는데….”

그런데 절체절명의 순간 왜 이 같은 일이 일어난 것일까요.
비밀은 바로 잠실구장의 조명탑 구조에 숨어 있습니다. 다른 구장에서도 가끔 외야수들이 조명탑 속에 숨어 버린 공을 놓치는 일이 있긴 합니다. 하지만 유독 잠실구장에서는 이 같은 일이 자주 발생합니다. 1년에 평균 3, 4차례는 나온다고 합니다.

항상 공이 조명탑에 숨는 것은 아닙니다. 라이나성 타구나 높이 뜬공이 조명탑 불빛에 숨는 경우는 거의 없습니다. 라이너성 타구와 높은 플라이 볼 중간쯤으로 날아가는 타구가 야수의 눈높이와 거의 일치할 때 이 같은 상황이 벌어집니다.
정수빈의 경기 후 “딱~하는 순간부터 벌써 공이 시야에서 사라졌다. 잡지는 못하더라도 몸으로라도 막아보자는 생각으로 공이 떨어지는 방향으로 뛰어갔을 뿐”이라고 했습니다. 하지만 야속한 공은 중수빈의 옆으로 빠져 나가고 말았습니다.
타구가 조명탑 불빛 속에 숨으면 사실상 이런 공을 잡기란 불가능에 가깝습니다. 예전 두산에서 뛰었던 심정수는 이런 타구에 정통으로 얻어맞은 일도 있었지요. 정수빈의 실수라고 하면 너무 가혹한 표현이겠지요.
또 하나의 의문. 만약 임재철이 준 플레이오프에서 다치지 않고 이날 우익수로 출장했다면 이 공을 잡을 수 있었을까요. “아무래도 그럴 확률이 높다”는 게 두산 관계자들의 전언입니다. 이날 타구는 왼손잡이인 정수빈의 오른쪽으로 날아갔습니다. 하지만 오른손잡이인 임재철이었다면 몸을 한 번 틀어서 공을 따라가야 했기 때문에 공이 시야에 들어올 가능성이 있었다는 것이지요.
아무튼 하늘은 조명탑의 불빛을 통해 SK의 손을 들어줬습니다. SK는 13일 열린 5차전에서는 2회 김현수에게 홈런을 맞아 선취점을 내주고도 비로 노게임이 선언돼 한숨을 돌릴 수 있었지요. 야구인들 중에는 “한국시리즈 우승은 하늘이 점지한다”고 말하는 사람이 많습니다. 플레이오프에서 SK를 도왔던 승리의 여신은 한국시리즈에서는 과연 누구에게 미소를 지을까요.
