를 봐서 그런지 그의 우승이 남일 같이 않더군요. 이상은 제가 쓴 기사입니다.
스즈키 아키코(24·일본)는 주니어 시절 잘나가는 피겨 선수였다. 그는 아사다 마오, 안도 미키 등 일본의 세계적인 선수들을 배출한 아이치 현 출신이다. 최근 프랑스 파리에서 열린 그랑프리 1차 대회에서 3위를 차지한 동갑내기 나카노 유카리와 앞서거니 뒤서거니 하며 일본 정상급 선수로 성장했다.
스즈키는 2001~2002시즌 일본에서 열린 주니어 그랑프리와 2002~2003시즌 미국 그랑프리에서 우승했다. 2003년 고등학교 졸업 후 고향을 떠나 대학에 진학한 뒤가 문제였다. 피겨 선수에게 필수적인 체중 조절에 따른 과도한 다이어트는 그를 힘들게 했다. 가족을 떠나 혼자 생활하게 된 것이 스트레스였다. 그는 음식을 전혀 입에 대지 못하는 섭식장애를 앓게 됐다. 50kg이던 몸무게는 32kg까지 줄었다. 체지방은 3%까지 떨어졌다. 피겨는 물론 외출조차 할 수 없었다. 결국 그는 짐을 싸 고향으로 돌아와야만 했다.
죽음의 위기까지 몰렸던 그는 어머니의 극진한 보살핌 속에 한 달 만에 다시 숟가락을 들었다. 1년 뒤 그는 2006년 토리노 동계올림픽 금메달리스트인 시즈카 아라카와의 활약에 자극받아 다시 스케이트화를 신었다. 지난해 6년 만에 나선 시니어 무대인 NHK트로피에서 예상을 깨고 은메달을 목에 걸었다.
스즈키는 지난달 31일 중국 베이징에서 끝난 그랑프리 3차 대회 컵 오브 차이나 여자 싱글에 초청을 받았다. 올 시즌 자신의 첫 그랑프리 대회 프리스케이팅에서 117.14점을 기록했다. 전날 쇼트프로그램(59.52점) 점수를 합쳐 176.66점으로 금메달을 목에 걸었다. 자신의 역대 최고점(167.64점)을 경신하며 시니어 그랑프리 시리즈 첫 우승을 차지했다.
그는 훈련을 할 때나 힘들 때 꼭 듣는 음악이 하나 있다. ‘어머니의 찬가’라는 곡이다. 어머니의 극진한 보살핌 속에 재기에 성공한 그가 자신의 마지막 올림픽이 될지도 모르는 2010년 밴쿠버 동계올림픽이 열리는 빙상장에서도 ‘어머니의 찬가’를 들을 수 있을지 기대된다.

하지만요. 하지만 저는 경기보다 더 제 마음을 끄는 것은 경기를 이끌어가는 인물이라고
생각합니다.
특히
역경을 이겨낸 사람들이요. 스즈키같은 경우도 그런 경우가 아닌가 싶습니다.
일본에서
지난해 방영된 다큐멘터리에서는 스즈키는 예전에는 정말로 촉망받는 선수였다고
합니다.
하지만
일명 거식증에 걸려 피겨를 포기할 정도까지 처합니다. 식당을 운영하는 어머니가
겨우겨우
보살핀 끝에 두부를 한 숟갈 먹기 시작하면서 건강을 되찾았다고 하네요.
30kg의
사람을 저도 본적이 없지만 정말 끔찍할거라 생각합니다. 그것도 자신의 딸이라고
생각한다면..
그동안
쉰 덕분에 다른 또래의 피겨 선수들보다 지명도도 없습니다. 현재 한 스포츠 아이스링크에서
아르바이트를
하고 있다고 합니다. 이번에 화려하게 재기한 그를 보니 제가 다 기쁘네요.
그가
꼭 밴쿠버 동계올림픽에 설 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다.
이제
다른 얘기를 할까 합니다. 이번 그랑프리 시리즈 출전 선수들을 보면
일본
선수는 무려 5-6명에 이릅니다. 우리가 잘 아는 아사다 마오, 안도 미키를 제외하고라도
3-4명
더 있다는 것입니다. 이 명단을 보면서 저는 참 부러웠습니다. 우리나라는 김연아
단
한명을 제외하고는 세계적인 클래스를 찾아보기 힘듭니다. 물론 김연아 선수 하나만으로도
일본의
5-6명의 선수들과는 비교가 되지 않는다는 것을 압니다. 하지만 이렇게 자국내의
경쟁이
곧
세계적인 선수들과의 경쟁으로 이어질 수 있다는 것이 한편으로는 부럽습니다.
아직
우리나라의 피겨는 김연아로 인해서 생긴 것들이 많습니다. 흔히 우리나라 피겨는
김연아
이전과
이후로 나눠져야 한다는 소리도 있습니다. 김연아 선수를 제외하고 우리나라의 현재
현실은
어떨까요? 김나영, 곽민정 등 많은 선수들이 국내에는 있습니다. 물론 하루하루 열심히
노력하고
있다는 것을 알지만 아직 세계적인 수준과는 많은 차이가 있습니다. 이들이 김연아
선수와
함께 세계적인 수준의 선수들과 경쟁을 벌이기에는 아직 무리가 있습니다.
하지만
저는 10년 뒤를 생각합니다. 혹시 골프의 박세리 키즈를 아시죠?
박세리가
90년 후반 미국여자골프에서 우승을 한 뒤 골프 열풍이 불었습니다.
그
뒤 10여년 뒤에 박세리에 영향을 받은 골프 키즈들이 지금은 세계 여자 골프계를
휩쓸고 있습니다.
이처럼
10년 뒤(-.- 2020년 쯤…너무 머네요) 박세리 키즈와 같은 김연아 키즈가 나올 것이라고
생각합니다.
지금 빙상장을 가도 한때 인기를 끌었던 쇼트트랙을 배우던 아이들이 이제는
피겨를
배우고 있습니다. 10년 뒤 한국 선수 4-5명 아니 그 이상의 선수들이 나와
그랑프리
시리즈에서 경쟁을 펼치는 모습을 상상해 봅니다. 꿈일까요?
아닙니다.
꼭 실현될거라 생각합니다.
저도 일본 부러운게 없는데…톱랭킹의 선수들이 많다는게..부럽다는..
분명 10년뒤에는 좋은 선수가 많이 나오리라 생각되고 기대가 되네요.그럴땐…우리나라 빙산연맹도 여러가지 환경적인 조건도 함께.. 세계적인 클래스의 선수들을 받아들일 준비가 되어있겠지요?ㅋㅋ

재능만 있으면 김연아처럼 키우고 싶다는…말을 하는 엄마들이 많아지고 있지만 한국에서 하는 피겨…너무 힘들어보이네요…일단 환경이 열악해서 한국에 비하면 일본선수들은 참 편한 선수생활을 하는거죠

김연아선수 같은 대선수는 사실..세계적으로도 다시 나오기는 쉽지 않을 것 같구요. 그 뒤를 이을 선수가 우리나라에 나오길 간절히 바라봅니다. 우선 그런 여건부터 만들어주고, 꿈을 꾸어야겠지만요 ㅠ.ㅠ

스즈키 선수에 대해 재작년인가.. 홀림에서 그소식을 보고 관심있게 지켜보던 선수입니다.. 단지 거식증으로 부터 복귀한 선수였다면,,, 그런가 했을 겁니다.. 그런데 이선수 피겨을 보면서 기존 일본선수들과는 다른면모가 보였습니다.. 특히 안무을 표현하는게 기계적이 아니라 곡을 느끼며 표현 하더군요.. 일본선수들의 그 경직된 안무표현은 주어진 과제수행으로 만들어진 감정같은 느낌들이지요.. 이선수는 그런면에서 벗어나 있고, 꽤 안정된 선수라 조만간 두각을 나타날것 같았습니다…
얼굴로 피겨하는건 아니지만, 우리 연아는 하늘이고 님들은 땅에 있는것같습니다.
연아양도 피겨할때 가장 아름답고 평소에는 다소 평범하지만, 그녀는 진정한 최고이지요.
