어린 시절 책을 많이 보는 편은 아니었지만 돌이켜 보면 인생의
큰 전환점에는 늘 책이 존재했음을 깨달았다.
내 인생을 변화시킨 첫번째 책을 고르자면 바로 ‘꽃들에게 희망을’이다.
몇 년도였는지 정확히 기억나진 않지만 분당으로 이사오기 전이니
국민학교 2학년 혹은 3학년 때을 것이다.
이 책은 어머니께서 선물해 주셨는데 그림이 많고 글자 수도 적어 줄곧
화장실 변기에 앉아 시간 때우기 용으로 보곤 했다.
하지만 마지막 책장을 덮으면서 나는 본격적으로 ‘인생이란
무엇인가’,'나는 누구인가’에 대한 고민을 하기 시작했다.
책의 줄거리는 매우 간단하다. 두 애벌레가 진정한 삶의 의미를
찾아간다는 내용이다.
매일 먹고 싸고 자라는 일상을 반복하던 줄무늬 애벌레가
"먹고 자라는 것 말고 뭔가 더 의미있는 삶이 있을거야!"
"There must be more to life than just eating and getting
bigger!"
라고 외치기 시작하면서 이야기는 시작된다.
삶의 의미를 찾아 방황하던 줄무늬 애벌레가 마침내 거대한 애벌레
기둥을 발견한다.
열심히 기둥을 오르던 한 애벌레에게 줄무늬 애벌레는 물었다.
"저 꼭대기엔 뭐가 있죠?"
"What’s at the top?"
그러자 그 애벌레는 이렇게 답한다.
"뭔진 모르겠지만 이렇게 모두 다 열심히 오르는 걸 보면 무진장
좋은 게 있는 것이 틀림없어요.
시간이 없어서 이만 가봐야 할 것 같아요! 안녕~"

결국 줄무늬 애벌레도 기둥을 오르기로 결심한다. 서로 짓밟고 짓밟히는
가운데 기둥 밖으로 떨어지는 애벌레들은
차디찬 죽음을 맞을 뿐이다. 하지만 그 누구도 아랑곳 하지 않는다. 그저 꼭대기의
무언가를 향해 열심히 오를 뿐이다.
줄무늬 애벌레는 기둥에서 우연히 만난 노랑 애벌레와 사랑에 빠지지만
꼭대기에 있는 그 무언가가 진정한 삶의 의미를 가져다 줄 거라는 생각에 사로잡혀 사랑을 져버리고
맹목적으로 꼭대기까지 오른다.
하지만…
사실 꼭대기에는 아무 것도 없었다.
10살, 혹은 11살.
당시 본 영화라고 해봐야 ‘사랑과 영혼’,'시네마 천국’이 전부였던
내게 이 책의 반전은 적지않은 충격으로 다가왔다.
그리고 ‘이렇게 애벌레처럼 오르는 것이 인생이란 말인가!’라는
고민을 시작했다.
그로부터 10 여년 흐른 요즘 장기출장을 다녀온 뒤 문득 이 책이 생각나서
원서를 구입해 다시 읽어보았다.
"나는 지금 무엇을 위해 살고 있는가?" 라는 질문을 스스로에게
던져보며
지금의 내가 기둥 속의 수많은 애벌레들처럼 목적없는 삶을 살고 있는 건 아닌가
하는 생각에 잠겨 다시금 삶을 되돌아보는 의미있는 시간을 가졌다.
이제 막 "엄마, 아빠, 사는게 뭐에요?"라고 물으며 인생에 대한
탐구를 시작한 어린이부터 입시에 지친 학생들, 야근에 시달리는 직장인들이 한번쯤 읽어보면 좋을 만한 간결하면서도 의미있는 책인 것 같다.
