않을 것이라는 점은 추정할 수 있다고 본다. 자연스럽지 않기 때문이다.
사실
나는 꽉 쪼이는 옷을 잘 입지 못한다. 답답하기 때문이다. 삼각팬티도 마찬가지다.
몇번 입어봤지만 답답해서 입을 수가 없었다. 사각팬티가 가장 편했다. 바지도 꽉
쪼이는 바지는 잘 입지 못한다.
그런데
며칠 전 출근을 하려는데 중학교에 다니는 딸이 "아빠, 바지가 너무 촌스러워.
새 바지를 좀 사는 게 어때?"라고 말했다. 사실은 그 때 입은 바지는
미국에 있을 때 샀던 바지인데 미국인들이 전형적으로 입는 면바지였다.
한국과
미국의 옷스타일의 큰 차이는 한국의 경우 꽉 쪼이는 바지가 대세라는 점이다. 물론
미국에도 바지가 FIT, STRAIGHT 등 다양한 폭이 존재하지만 한국에서처럼 쫙 쪼이는
바지를 입는 사람을 발견하기란 쉽지 않다. 한국기준으론 ‘아저씨 바지’가 대세다.
언젠가 미국에 살고 있는 후배가 한국에 왔다가 쇼핑몰에 갔다오더니 ‘한국에선 왜
이렇게 쪼이는 바지를 입어요? 여기에서 산 바지를 미국에서 입기에는 너무 부담스러워서
쇼핑좀 하려다가 바지 한벌만 샀다’고 말하는 것을 보고 한국사람이 얼마나 쪼이는
바지를 입고 있는 줄 새삼 깨달았다.
한국인들이
간과하고 있는 점 중의 하나는, 한국인이 무척 ‘보이는 것’과 ‘패션’에 신경쓴다는
점이다. 요즘은 겨울이라 좀 그렇지만, 거리에 나가보면 안다. 세계 어느 도시를
가더라도 한국인처럼 멋쟁이가 많은 곳은 없다.

미국에서 해수욕장이나 수영장에 가보면 마찬가지로 ‘아저씨 수영복’이 대세다. 반면
한국은 어떤가?

건강을 심하게 해치는 것이 분명한 멋은 문제가 있다고 생각한다. 한국의 루키즘.
