‘마린보이’ 박태환(20·단국대)의 실패를 놓고 많은 말들이 오고갑니다. 지난해 베이징올림픽 금메달리스트가 2009로마세계수영선수권대회 자유형 200m와 400m에서 결선에 오르지 못했기 때문에 당연히 따라오는 결과라고 생각합니다.
훈련부족, 정신자세, 지도자 부재, 수영계 파벌의 희생자…. 많은 얘기가 나오고 있지만 문제의 핵심은 박태환을 제대로 관리하는 시스템의 부족입니다. 박태환은 한국 수영사상 첫 올림픽 금메달의 주인공입니다. 과거 대부분 예선 탈락으로 올림픽 메달은 상상도 못할 때 한국 수영을 세계무대로 도약시킨 한마디로 ‘수영 천재’라고 할 수 있죠.
하지만 올림픽이 끝난 뒤 이 천재를 어떻게 관리할지에 대한 논의가 없었습니다. 그냥 ‘열심히 훈련하면 되겠지’라는 안일한 생각이었죠. 그러다보니 박태환을 통해 이익을 보려는 세력들이 나타나게 됩니다. 제가 볼 땐 박태환은 일종의 희생양이라고 생각합니다. 전담팀을 두 번이나 구성했지만 이번까지 모두 실패했습니다. 전담팀이 박태환의 미래를 위해 구성된 게 아니라 즉흥적으로 구성됐기 때문입니다.
일본의 수영 영웅 기타지마 고스케는 전담팀이 영양사 3명을 포함해 18명이나 된다고 합니다. 모두 수영에 일가견이 있는 사람들입니다. 모두 기타지마가 어떻게 하면 기록을 단축할지를 고민하고 있습니다. 기타지마가 세계 평영의 1인자로 군림할 수 있었던 이유입니다.

이점에서 박태환과 함께 ‘10대 스타’로 떠올랐던 ‘피겨여왕’ 김연아(19·고려대)의 관리 시스템에 대해서 얘기할까 합니다.
김연아는 피겨요정으로 떠오를 때인 2007년 4월 스포츠마케팅 전문업체인 IB스포츠와 계약을 했습니다. IB스포츠는 제일 먼저 김연아가 어떻게 해야 요정에서 여왕으로 등극할 수 있는지를 연구했습니다. 그래서 내린 결론이 국내의 열악한 훈련 여건을 벗어나 마음 놓고 훈련할 수 있는 캐나다 토론토에 훈련캠프를 차리는 것이었습니다. 지도자도 중요하다고 판단했습니다. 세계무대를 호령하기 위해선 그에 걸맞는 지도자가 필요하다는 판단에 세계적인 지도자인 브라이언 오셔(캐나다) 코치를 영입했습니다. 그리고 스포츠과학에 입각한 체계적인 훈련을 시킨 것입니다. 김연아가 피겨여왕에 등극한 원동력입니다.
따라서 박태환의 천재성을 다시 되찾기 위해서는 전담팀을 제대로 꾸려야 한다는 것입니다. 박태환의 후원사 SK텔레콤이 수영선수권대회가 끝나면 전담팀을 전면 개편한다고 합니다. 전면 개편에서 가장 중요한 것은 박태환의 미래입니다. SK텔레콤과 박태환 주변사람들의 미래가 아니라는 것을 명심해야 합니다. 과거 전담팀은 박태환의 미래보다는 주변사람들의 이득을 챙기는 쪽으로 구성된 측면이 강했습니다. SK텔레콤이 새로운 전담팀을 꾸릴 때 가장 중요하게 생각해야할 게 이것입니다.
중요한 게 또 하나 있습니다. 선수의 마음가짐입니다. 세계무대를 호령하는 선수들의 특징은 세계 최고를 지키려는 부단한 노력입니다. 베이징올림픽 8관광인 ‘수영 황제’ 마이클 펠프스(미국)는 자서전에서 ‘지옥이 따로 없는 훈련’을 했다고 밝혔습니다. 이 훈련은 11세부터 자신을 지도한 밥 보먼 코치가 시켰습니다. 보먼 코치는 펠프스를 훈련시키며 세계 최고의 자리를 지키기가 얼마나 어려운지를 늘 각인시켜줬다고 합니다.
그런데 박태환은 어땠습니까. 박태환을 제대로 이끌어준 지도자가 사실상 없었습니다.
노민상 대표팀 감독은 “20세 어린 선수가 얼마나 할 게 많겠느냐. 2012년 런던올림픽으로 가는 과정으로 봐달라”며 박태환의 최근 훈련 태만을 시행착오로 봐달라고 했습니다. 박태환을 ‘운동 기계’로 만들지는 말아야한다는 측면에서는 동의를 하지만 지도자라면 박태환에게 ‘국민 스타’로서 해야 할 과제와 정신자세를 늘 각인시켜야 했습니다. 전담팀도 마찬가지입니다. 박태환이란 스타는 그냥 만들어지는 게 아닙니다.
스포츠심리학자들은 “스타플레이어가 정상을 자리를 계속 지킬 수 있는 가장 중요한 요소는 실력이 아니라 인성이다”라고 말합니다.

전념하겠다는 마음 자세 중요
김연아는 ‘피겨 여왕’의 자리를 지키기 위해서 캐나다에서 가급적 한국에 오지 않으려고 합니다. 한국에 오면 훈련에 방해되는 일들이 너무 많으니까요. 박태환은 대표팀 훈련이 너무 강하다며 선수촌 밖 훈련을 강조합니다. 선수촌에 있으면 친구도 제대로 만나지 못하니까 ‘감옥’ 같다고 평소에 말합니다. 그리고 전담팀과 미국전지훈련을 했습니다. 결과는 어땠습니까. 참패였습니다.
지난번에 제가 박태환에게 주는 교훈을 하나 썼습니다. ‘땀방울 없는 결실은 없다’라는 주제였습니다. 지금 인기가 땀의 대가라는 얘기였죠. 그런데 박태환은 참패 후에 계속 변명으로만 일관하고 있는 것 같아 안타깝습니다.
지금 박태환에게 필요한 것은 동생 김연아에게서 배울 점을 찾아야 한다는 것입니다. 멀리 펠프스나 올림픽 예선 탈락의 아픔을 극복하고 이번 대회 2관왕에 오르며 ‘권토중래’를 이룬 파울 비더만(독일)에서 교훈을 찾을 필요가 없습니다.
언제가 세계 최고의 자리를 지키려 노력하는 김연아의 자세를 배웠으면 좋겠습니다. 또 수영 전문가 집단을 전담팀으로 꾸려 체계적인 훈련을 시키는 시스템도 마련했으면 좋겠습니다. 그래야 2012년에도 수영 금메달을 기대하지 않을까요. 실패는 성공의 어머니라고 했습니다. 이번 실패로 박태환과

박태환에 대해 한 측면만을 보면 여러가지 얘기가 나올 수 있습니다. 종합적으로 생각하고 판단하는 게 좋을 것 같습니다. 박태환은 “훈련을 열심히 했다”고 합니다. 하지만 객관적인 결과는 아니었습니다. 물론 훈련을 열심히 해도 결과가 좋지 않을 수는 있죠. 저는 전반적인 박태환 관리 시스템을 바꾸는 게 좋을 것 같다는 판단을 했습니다.
