한국에서 디젤 승용차가 잘 안 팔린다는 얘기는 앞서 드렸습니다.
디젤 승용차가 성능은 뛰어나면서도 안 팔리는 이유 중 하나는 바로 소음입니다.
시동을 켜 놓고 차 밖에서 들으면 디젤 엔진 특유의 ‘달달달’(?) 거리는 소리가
들리는데, 바로 이 소리를 소비자들이 싫어하는 것입니다.
하지만 이미 디젤 승용차를 구입해서 타고 다니는 사람들은 “차가 시끄럽지 않느냐”는
말에 “그렇지 않다”고 대답합니다.
디젤 승용차가 밖에서는 소음이 들리지만 차 안에서는 약간의 진동만 느껴질 뿐,
소음은 가솔린 차량과 큰 차이가 없기 때문입니다.
“나 귀에만 소음이 안 들리면 되지, 왜 내 차 밖의 사람이 느끼는 소음까지 고려하면서
차를 구입해야 하느냐”는 게 많은 디젤 승용차 운전자들의 생각입니다.
도요타의 하이브리드 차량 ‘프리우스’.
전기모터로 작동하는 저속에서는 소음이 전혀 나지 않습니다.
운전자들이 차를 선택 할 때 기준이 되는 소음. 안에서도, 밖에서도 소리가 나지
않는 ‘좋은 차’.
그런데 정말 아무런 소리가 나지 않는 차가 좋은 차일까요?
사람들이 많이 걸어 다니는 번화가나 주택가 골목에서 차를 운전할 때 많은 운전자들은
“좀 당황스럽다”고 얘기합니다.
“길을 걷는 사람들이 바로 등 뒤에까지 내가 운전하는 차가 따라 붙었는데도
비켜 설 생각을 안 한다”는 겁니다.
그 사람들이 물론 알고도 ‘골 지르려고’ 안 비켜주는 것은 아니죠. 요즘 나오는
차들의 엔진이 너무 정숙해서 실제로 등 뒤에 차가 오고 있는지 모르는 것입니다.
그렇다고 ‘빵빵’ 경적을 울리자니 깜짝 놀라서 기분 나빠 할 것 같고…. 결국
이러지도 못하고 저러지도 못하고 알아서 비켜 주기를 바라는 수밖에 없다는 것입니다.
이런 면에서 디젤 차량 운전자들은 편합니다. ‘달달달’ 거리는 소리가 뚜렷이
들리기 때문에 사람들이 잘 비켜줍니다.
보행자의 안전에는 가솔린차량 보다 디젤 차량이 도움이 된다고 잘라 말할 수도
있습니다.
하지만 자동차 기술의 진보는 사실 보행자의 안전과는 상관없는 방향으로 향해있습니다.
이미 시판중인 하이브리드 차량은 전기 모터만 작동하는 저속 구간에서 소음이
전혀 나지 않습니다. 개발은 완료 됐지만 아직 시판되지 않고 있는, 그러나 하이브리드에
이어 대중화할 것으로 보이는 전기 자동차, 수소 연료 전지 차량 등은 저속에서 뿐만
아니라 고속에서도 소리가 전혀 나지 않습니다.
이들 차량이 내는 유일한 소음은 타이어와 도로의 마찰음뿐입니다.
상당 수 운전자들은 ‘드디어 꿈이 실현이 되는구나’ 좋아할 지도 모르겠습니다.
하지만 많은 국가의 정부는 ‘소리 안 나는 차’ 때문에 벌써부터 고민에 빠졌습니다.
하이브리드 차량 등이 보행자, 특히 시각 장애가 있는 보행자의 안전에 위협이
될 수 있기 때문입니다. 또 최근 급격히 늘고 있는 자전거 이용자들의 안전도 이
같은 자동차들 때문에 위협을 받을 수 있다는 것입니다.
13일자 뉴욕타임즈에 실린 톰 젤러의 칼럼을 보면 일본 정부는 이달 초 하이브리드
차량에 소음을 내는 기능을 장착하도록 의무화 하는 방안을 검토하기 시작했습니다.
EU와 미국 정부도 자동차의 소음을 의무화 하는 방안을 검토하기 시작했다고 합니다.
자동차의 내·외부에 별도의 스피커를 달아서 소리를 내도록 하겠다는 겁니다.
자동차 업체들은 이미 운전자의 기호에 따라 ‘소음’을 선택하는 기능 개발에 나서고
있습니다.
가령 ‘스포츠카 모드’ , ‘오토바이 모드’, ‘고급 세단 모드’ 등으로 취향에
따라 소음을 선택할 수 있다는 것입니다.
일부 운전자들은 벌써부터 이 같은 방안에 반발하고 있습니다. 미국의 한 운전자는
“도요타 ‘프리우스’를 구입해 지난 8년 동안 16만Km를 탔지만 아직 내 차로 사람을
다치게 한 적이 없다”고 했답니다.
사실 자동차나 오토바이의 소음은 또 하나의 ‘엔터테인먼트’적인 요소입니다.
할리 데이비슨 오토바이에 열광하는 마니아들이 이 오토바이를 선택하는 이유 중
하나는 바로 ‘바당 바당~’거리는 할리데이비슨 특유의 배기음 때문입니다.
할리데이비슨도 오토바이를 개발할 때 보다 더 ‘할리데이비슨적인 배기음’을
내기 위해 신경 씁니다.
독일 BMW 아우디 등도 실내에서 어느 정도 엔진 소리가 들리게 적절히 소음을
통과 시킵니다. 자동차를 운전하면서 엔진 소리를 즐기라는 뜻입니다.
렉서스는 좀 다릅니다. ‘소음을 완전히 막아버렸다’고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로
조용합니다. 이 때문에 차를 좀 즐기려는 사람들은 독일차, 조용한 차를 원하는 운전자는
렉서스를 선택하는 경향이 있습니다.
하지만 앞으로는 이 같은 선택권은 사라질 것으로 보입니다. 각국 정부가 어떤
법안을 마련하느냐에 따라 앞으로는 ‘타이어와 도로의 마찰음이 멋있는 차’를 고르거나
‘아예 마찰음조차 없는 좋은 타이어가 달려 나오는 차’, 또는 ‘가장 멋진 배경음이
옵션으로 달려 나오는 차’ 중에 하나를 골라야 할 것 같습니다.

환경전문가들은 그렇지 않다고 합니다.
기름을 적게 쓰면 분명 대기 오염은 줄어들지만,
하이브리드카를 만들기 위해 배터리 만들고 폐기하면서 다른 종류의 오염이 상당하다고 합니다.
그러니까 대기오염 대신에 수질오염이나 토양오염으로 종류가 바뀌는 것 뿐이지요.
어쨌든 석유에너지의 한정으로 인해 하이브리드카로 갈 수 밖에 없어보입니다.

학교 선배님이 프리우스를 랜탈해서 사용하다 좀 재미있는 경험을 하긴 했습니다. 골목에 차를 세워뒀다가 출발하려할때 주변에 있던 사람들이 당췌 길을 비켜주질 않아서 어쩔 수 없이 클락션을 울리셔야 했었습니다. 처음 시동을 걸면 전기로 동작하기 때문에 소음이 전혀 안납니다. 차 성능은 끝내주더군요. 배기량을 훨씬 상회하는 파워에 황당한 연비. 안정된 승차감. 베터리때문에 트렁크가 작은게 좀 흠이지만 정말 탐나는 차였습니다. 늘 시동걸고 출발할땐 고생을 했지만요 ^^;; (일본에 살고 있어서 다양한 하이브리드를 구경할 수 있는데 지금은 혼다 하이브리드카가 도요타 프리우스의 판매량을 넘어섰다고 합니다.)
