어느 마을에 "문제아"가 있었습니다.
그 마을 사람들은 모두 이 문제아를 싫어합니다.
싫어하다 못해, 이 문제아 녀석 하나만 없으면 온 마을이 편해질 것이라고 늘
생각합니다.
그런데, 어느 날 이 마을에서 기적 같은 일이 벌어졌습니다.
"문제아"가 마음을 고쳐먹고 새사람이 되고자 하는 일이 벌어진 것입니다.
그 때 마을 사람들은 이 "문제아"에 대해 어떤 반응을 보일까요?
경우에 따라 여러 가지 양상이 있을 수 있겠지만,
그 "문제아"가 마음을 고쳐먹은 일로 인해 커다란 혼란을 느끼는 마을
사람들이 많을 수도 있습니다.
"너 왜 이래? 그냥 하던대로 해. 네가 이러니까 불안하잖아!"
과연 이런 일이 있을 수 있을까요?
있을 수 있다면, 어떻게 그런 일이 있을 수 있을까요?
세상일을 관찰하다 보면,
가끔씩 사람들이 어떤 문제에 대해
그 문제의 해결을 원하는 게 아니라 그 문제의 원흉으로 "간주되는" 사람을
탓하고 욕하고 비방하고 응징하는 것을 원하는 게 아닌가라는 생각을 하게
될 때가 있습니다.
물론 때로는 그 과정 역시 최종 문제해결과 연결되는 경우도 없지는 않을
것입니다.
그럼에도 불구하고,
어떤 경우엔 "현실적 해결책"까지 마다하고 오로지 "때리기"에만
급급한 모습을 볼 때가 있는 것도 사실입니다.
사람들이 자기 자신의
불안감과 여러 가지 실패의 요인을 어떤 누군가의 탓으로 돌리면서 일종의
"배설적 만족감"을 느끼는 경우가 적지 않다고 생각합니다.
제 기억에, <게으름뱅이 정신분석>이란
책을 썼던 일본인 정신분석학자인 "기시다 슈"의 분석 중에 이런 내용이
있었습니다.
"좋은 집안에 종종 <말썽꾸리기 문제 아들>이 생기는 경우가 있다.
집안 사람들은 모두 그 녀석 때문에 골치를 썩고 그 녀석만 없으면 집안이 평안해
질 것이라 생각한다.
하지만, 무의식적 차원에서는 모든 식구들이 그 문제아로 인해 일종의 만족감을
얻고 있다."

대부분의 사람은 자신이 "선(善)하다"라는 것을 믿고 싶어합니다.
그런데, 선악(善惡)이란 것은 상대적이어서
자신이 선하기 위해서 다른 그 누군가가 악(惡)해야 합니다.
하지만, 자신이 선하다는 것을 확신하는 일은 쉽지 않을 뿐더러 늘 불확실하고,
자신이 혹시 악(惡)한 사람은 아닐까 불안해 합니다.
이럴 때, 자신이 아닌 그 누군가가 그 누가 보더라도 확실하게 "악(惡)"이라는
것을 보여주고 있다면,
그는 적어도 자신이 "악은 아니다"라는 생각을 하는 데에 도움을 줍니다.
[제 이야기는 기시다 슈의 해석과는 조금 다르기는 합니다.]
물론 이러한 안심은 표면적인 의식에서는 드러나지 않고 심층적인 심리 속에 묻혀
있으며,
자기 자신도 잘 모를 경우가 대부분이겠지요.
그렇게 "확실한 악인"으로 인해 자신의 "상대적 선"이 보증되고
있는 상황에서
만약 그 "확실한 악인"이 완전히 사라진다면
"악인의 부재"는 평화를 가져다 주는 것이 아니라 오히려 자신이 악일
수도 있다는 불안심리를 생성하면서
혼란에 빠질 수도 있습니다.
또한 적지 않은 수의 많은 사람들은 "문제로 간주되는 사람"을
욕하고 비방함으로써
자신의 욕구 불만을 일시적으로 해소하기도 합니다.
그런 방식이 계속 유지되는 것은
인간의 욕구 혹은 욕망이란 것이 실은 대단히 복잡한 맥락에서 발생하고,
그 때문에 욕구 불만의 정확한 원인 진단 자체가 어려워 "당장 누군가에게
심하게 욕이라도 해서"
그 정체 모를 불만을 다소라도 완화(해결이 아닌 완화)하는 것이
좀더 근본적인 문제해결보다 훨씬 더 쉬운 경우가 많기 때문이라고 판단해 보기도
합니다.
그리고 그 "누군가에 대한 비방"이
그런 욕구 불만 완화에 실질적이고 효과적인 도움이
되기 위해서는 그 대상이 실제 문제의 진짜 원인이라고 강력하게 믿어야 할 것입니다.
따라서 비방자들은 자신이 비방하는 사람을 때때로 "절대악"으로 규정하고,
비방자의 내적 욕구 불만과 불안정성이 강하면 강할수록 그 비방 대상을 절대악으로
규정하는 정도도 더 강해질 것입니다.
지금까지 쓴 글은 다분히 가설적 성격이 있기도 하고,
이것이 진리이며 진실이다라고 말할 수 없는지는 모르겠습니다.
그리고 모든 "악인에 대한 비난과 비방"이 반드시 이 경우에만 해당된다고
말할 수 없기도 합니다.
그럼에도 불구하고, 이와 같은 가설적 논리들은
지금까지 우리가 해왔던 생각과 행동들에 대해 적어도 한번쯤은 되돌아 볼 수
있게 만드는
계기를 마련해 줄 수는 있다고 판단해서 이와 같은 글을 올려본 것입니다.

말썽꾸러기의 행동은 모범적인 다른 식구들이 "은밀히 해보고 싶었던 행동"들이다.
그들은 말썽꾸리기를 보면서 "대리만족"을 느끼며,
동시에 말썽꾸러기를 비난하면서 자신들의 "모범"을 유지하고 있다.

제가 기시다 슈의 책(게으름뱅이 정신분석1)을 읽었던 것은 아마도 1996년이었던 것 같습니다. 그 내용에 대한 기억도 가물가물하긴 합니다만, 대단히 흥미롭게 보았던 기억만은 생생합니다.
명품을 바라보는 사람들의 시선은 제게는 흥미로운 현상 중의 하나입니다. 한편으로는 “은근한 과시”가 있고 다른 한편으로는 “은근한 비난”이 있는데, 더 재미있는 것은 “은근한 비난”이 때때로 “은근한 과시”에 대한 동경으로 전환되기도 하고, “은근한 과시”가 때때로 “은근한 비난”을 옹호하기도 하는 점입니다. 즉 제가 관심을 갖는 것은 “명품”도 아니고 “짝퉁”도 아니고, 이를 두고 발생하는 사람들의 반응과 그 반응의 변화입니다.

새로운 블로그 포스팅을 하면 글이 길어질까봐 댓글 코너에 살짝 이 글을 남겨놓고 갑니다.
생활의 “조정모드”에 들어갈 예정입니다.
제 블로그의 글은 내면와 외면의 어떤 요구에 대한 반응입니다.
요구가 강렬하면 글이 마구 쏟아질 것입니다.
아직도 못다한 이야기들은 많습니다.
하지만, 꼭 지금 써야만 할 이유가 없는 글들은 굳이 지금 쓰지 않아도 될 것 같습니다.
모든 글쓰기, 아니 모든 표현 양식은 “특정한 타자”를 향한 것입니다.
저는 불특정한 대상을 상대로 글을 쓰지 않습니다.
그것은 제가 아는 사람을 대상으로 글을 쓴다는 의미는 아닙니다.
특정한 상황과 특정한 맥락에서 특정한 생각을 가질 것으로 추정되는 사람들에게 글을 쓴다는 의미입니다.
아울러 제 글쓰기의 대상은 상황에 따라 달라지기도 합니다.
제가 원하는 대상 단 한 사람만 읽어도 성공이지요.
저는 남들보다, 아니 그 누구(심지어 어린아이보다도)보다 더 똑똑하지도 않고 더 지혜롭지도 않습니다.
그저 목마른 사람들과 함께 물을 나눠 마시고 싶은 사람일 뿐입니다.
제게 물의 여유가 좀더 있으면 제 물을 그들에게 나눠주고
제가 목이 마를 경우엔 물의 여유를 가진 남들을 찾아가 조금이라도 나눠달라고 할 것입니다.
제 글쓰기와 글읽기는 그 이상도 그 이하도 아닙니다.
글쓰기와 글읽기는 죽을 때까지
지속될 행위임에 분명하지만, 늘 지속해야 하는 것은 아닐 수도 있다고 생각합니다.
밥은 매일 먹는 것이지만, 밥을 먹고 나서 배가 부르면 계속해서 밥을 먹을 필요도 이유도 없습니다.
그렇게 할 경우엔 반드시 배탈이 나겠지요.
따라서 제가 말씀드리는 “생활의 조정”이란 밥을 먹고 난 뒤의 행동이라 할 수도 있을 것입니다.
물론 밥은 또 먹게 될 것입니다.

우선
문제아 라는 개념..
주위 사람들에게
스트레스를 주는 인물을 말한다고 해야겠지요.
여러해 전
아들을 업고 다니면서 아들 치료 차
우리 병원에 오던 중년의 여인이 있었습니다.
중년의 여인..
무드가 있을 듯한 단어지만
사실은
그 여인을 볼 때 마다
가슴이 아팠습니다.
아들이 뇌성마비였습니다.
덩치가 엄마 보다 더 커 보였습니다.
실제로 엄마보다 더 컸는지 어떤지는
정확하게는 모릅니다.
늘 업혀있는 모습만 보았기 때문입니다.
어느 한 해는
20년 이상 중풍으로 움직이지 못하고 누워만 계신
선배 어머니 왕진을 다닌 적이 있었습니다.
어느 때는 아들 집에
어느 때는 딸 집에
그렇게 자식들 집을 전전하고 계셨습니다.
그리고도 몇년을 지나서야 임종하셨습니다.
제가 다니는 교회에서
청년부 부장으로 있었을 때입니다.
뇌종양으로
식물인간 상태가 되어
여러해 입원하고 있는 친구가 있었습니다.
나이 불과 서른이었습니다.
기도 차 병실에 들를 때
그 청년의 부모님에게
위로의 말 조차도 나오지 못하더군요.
결국은 세상을 떠났습니다.
예를 들자면
제 경우도 되겠습니다.
교통사고로
혼수상태의 아내를 보러
중환자실을 하루에 두번씩 다녔습니다.
한달하고도 보름 동안 그렇게 했습니다.
숨만 쉬는 아내를
안스러워 하며
바라볼 뿐이었습니다.
눈물 많이 흘렸습니다.
제 죽마고우에게
골치꺼리 막내가 있었습니다.
폭력 때문에 충고의 말 조차도
못하던 동생이었습니다.
그렇게 속앓이를 하던
그 막내 동생이 목을 매고 자살을 했습니다.
제 친구는
집 나간 제수씨가 남긴
조카들을 돌보고 있을 겁니다.
그러나
그러한 문제를 일으키던 당사자가 사라지면
어떻게 될까요.
그 주위의 사람들은
어떤 마음이 생길까요.
살 맛이 날까요.
아닙니다.
다 슬퍼합니다.
그것도 가슴이 찢어질 듯..
참으로 오랫동안 회한에 젖게 됩니다.
그것은
사랑이라는 매개체가 있었기 때문입니다.
부모자식 간에..
부부 간에..
형제 간에..
사랑이 넘치는 곳에서는
문제아가 문제가 되지를 않습니다.
오히려
주위사람들을 결속하며
화평케 하는 촉매제가 됩니다.
그러나
미움이 있는 곳에서는
문제가 되지 않을 것도 문제가 되곤 합니다.
일반적 사회구성원 간에서의
사랑과 이해는
상당한 노력과 인내가 필요하지만
증오와 편견은 쉽게 생기게 되는 것 같습니다.
복잡한 현대 사회에서는
남을 이해하고 아끼는
마음의 여유를 갖기 어려울 것입니다.
내 몸이 피곤하고 머리가 복잡한데
언제 힘들여 남을 배려하겠습니까.
오히려
남 탓하며 자신을 위로하기 바쁘겠지요.
그러나
우리는 함께 노력하여야 할 것입니다.
증오 시기 나태 등등..
우리 속에 숨어서
불만 불평을 배설하며
남을 탓하고
문제아를 만들고 있는
원죄의 바이러스와 맞서 싸워야 할 것입니다.
매우 어려운 일입니다.
그러나
어려운 일일수록 성취감이 크지 않겠습니까
또한
우리에게는 승리의 백신이 있습니다.
원망 보다는 배려로써
저주 보다는 기도로써
불신과 갈등을
신뢰와 화평으로 변화시키는
사랑이라는 묘약이 있습니다.
