3월 5일자 대중문화 웹진 O2에 실린 기사입니다. 지난해 9월 한국 비하 발언으로
2PM 재범이 탈퇴했을 때 중앙대 사회학과 이나영 교수님과 석사과정 정민우 연구원의
논문 ‘스타를 관리하는 팬덤, 팬덤을 관리하는 산업’으로 블로깅을 한 적이 있었는데요.
이번 사태를 보며 연구자들의 생각이 궁금했었습니다.
통화 끝에 정민우 연구원은 앞으로 아이돌 그룹들의 수명 주기가 짧아질 것 같다고
말했습니다. 이번 사태처럼 팬들의 목소리가 기획사에 전혀 영향력을 끼치지 않고,
반영하려 노력하지 않는다면 결국 팬들은 스타에게서 등을 돌리게 될 것이고 수명이
짧아질 수 밖에 없다는 이야기였습니다. 결국 수명을 유지하려면 기획사들이 변해야
할텐데요. 전문가들은 기획사들은 변하지 않을 것이라고 바라봤습니다. 부정적인
의견은 위 논문의 두 저자 또한 마찬가지였습니다.

"팬이 안티가 되면 더 무섭다는 것을 보여주겠다."
JYP엔터테인먼트(이하 JYP)는 지난달 25일 홈페이지를 통해 ‘문제적 사생활’을
이유로 그룹 2PM의 전 리더 재범의 영구 탈퇴와 전속 계약 해지를 발표했다. 이후
인터넷상에서는 재범의 ‘사생활’을 두고 온갖 추측이 난무했고 JYP는 27일 2PM 멤버
6명, 정욱 대표와 팬대표 87명이 참석하는 간담회를 마련했다. 이 자리에서는 멤버
전원이 재범의 탈퇴에 동의했는지, 재범 탈퇴 원인에 대한 항간의 루머가 사실인지,
재범이 복귀할 가능성은 없는지 등에 대해 이야기가 오갔다.
JYP측은 간담회를 통해 의혹을 해소하려고 했지만 팬들은 소속사와 여섯 멤버들의
결정을 받아들일 수 없다는 입장만 재확인하며 안티로 변화하는 양상을 보이고 있다.
수 십 개의 팬카페가 폐쇄됐고 회원수 10만을 넘는 팬 카페 ‘환상’은 2PM 보이콧으로
성격을 바꿨다. 2PM 공식 팬클럽 ‘핫티스트’에서 한 글자 바꾼 커뮤니티 ‘안티스트’도
생겨났다.
아이돌 그룹의 해체가 아닌 멤버 한 명의 탈퇴를 두고 팬들이 기획사를 비난하고
안티팬으로 돌아선 것은 이례적인 현상. 아이돌 그룹 팬덤의 진화 과정을 연구한
중앙대 사회학과 이나영 교수와 정민우 씨(중앙대 사회학과 석사과정)의 일명 ‘가족
모델’로 이번 사태를 들여다보았다. 이 모델은 이 교수와 정 씨(제1저자)가 지난해
10월 발표한 논문 ‘스타를 관리하는 팬덤, 팬덤을 관리하는 산업’에서 ‘팬덤-스타-기획사’의
관계를 ‘어머니-아들-아버지’라는 틀로 해석하며 제시한 것이다.
▶ H.O.T 해체를 막을 수 없었던 아이돌 1세대 팬덤
이 교수팀은 한국사회에 ‘팬덤’이 본격적으로 등장하고 사회적 현상으로 주목받게
된 시점을 2000년대 이후로 보고 있다. 흔히 ‘아이돌 1세대’라고 불리는 H.O.T 젝스키스
S.E.S 핑클 god가 활동하던 시기.
’1세대’ 팬덤에 있어 ‘내가 좋아하는 스타’는 숭배의 대상이었다. 그렇기 때문에
하나의 그룹에게만 애정을 쏟았으며 다른 그룹에게는 배타적이었다. 10대 시절 H.O.T의
팬이었던 배지은 씨(29·회사원)는 "당시 반에서 H.O.T 팬과 젝스키스
팬들은 잘 어울리지도 않았다"고 회고했다.
팬덤의 초창기였던 만큼 이들은 기획사에 영향력을 행사하지는 못했다. 위 논문에
따르면 ’1세대’ 팬덤은 "자신들이 열광하던 스타에 대한 기획사의 착취나 부당한
대우에 분노했음에도, 실질적으로 팬덤이 변화시킬 수 있었던 것은 크지 않았던 것"이다.
실제 아이돌 1세대들은 팬덤의 의지와는 상관없이 2000년 초반 해체하게 됐고
팬들은 실질적인 영향력을 행사하기 위해 변화하기 시작한다. 이 교수팀의 연구에
참여했던 한 1세대 팬은 "H.O.T 해체를 막기 위해 팬들이 모여 주주로서의 권리를
모색하는 등 시도를 했지만 실패했다"며 "이후 god 팬덤의 경우 주식투자를
통해 주주로서의 권리를 행사해 한 멤버의 탈퇴를 저지한 경험이 있다"고 밝혔다.
▶ 기획사와 긴밀한 관계를 맺는 아이돌 2세대 팬덤
‘아이돌 1세대’들의 해체 후 2000년대 중반 동방신기 슈퍼주니어 원더걸스 소녀시대
2PM 등 ‘아이돌 2세대’들이 등장했다.
이 시기에는 음반 산업 구조가 CD에서 MP3파일로 넘어가며 수익성이 낮아졌고
엔터테인먼트 산업의 경영방식이 바뀌었다. 이 교수팀은 "기획사의 목표는 아이돌
스타가 일정한 궤도에 올랐을 때, 단기간에 최대의 수익을 다양한 방식으로 창출하는
것"으로 변화했다고 분석했다.
기획사는 수익을 창출하기 위해 벨소리 통화음부터 화보집, 팬덤 활동용 응원봉과
풍선 등을 판매하기 시작했다. 이 때부터 엔터테인먼트 기획사는 팬덤을 다른 각도에서
바라보기 시작한다. 기획사는 수익을 높이기 위해 상품을 구매하는 팬덤과 긴밀한
관계를 맺게 된다.
’2세대’ 팬덤 또한 스스로를 ‘고객님’이라 부르며 "스타에 대한 충성도 높은
‘추종자’이기 보다는 필요에 따라 스타를 향유하며 스타에게 자신들이 바라는 ‘고객감동’을
요청하고 제언할 수 있는 권리를 가진 소비자"로 인식한다.
▶ 아들(스타)이 잘 자라도록 뒷바라지하는 어머니(팬덤)
’2세대’ 팬덤의 또 다른 특징은 스타를 ‘서포트’ 한다는 것이다. 이들의 목표는
내가 좋아하는 스타가 정상의 자리에 오르는 것. 자식이 잘 자라길 바라는 어머니의
마음과 같다. 이 교수는 이런 맥락에서 ‘스타를 아들, 팬덤을 어머니, 스타를 탄생시키는
기획사는 아버지의 역할을 담당한다’고 해석했다.
그는 "’아버지’인 기획사가 스타의 물질적 기반을 마련한다면, ‘어머니’인
팬덤은 엔터테인먼트 시장에 던져진 스타를 성장시키고 정상의 자리에 올려놓기 위해
스타의 현재의 조건을 고려하고, 미래를 설계 관리하는 실천을 수행하는 매니저이자
또 하나의 경영자"라고 설명한다.
그러나 아버지(기획사)와 어머니(팬덤)의 지위가 동등하지 않기에 문제가 발생한다.
‘아들(스타)’을 키우는 ‘어머니(팬덤)’는 그 만큼의 영향력을 행사하려고 하지만
‘아버지(기획사)’는 새로운 상품에 대한 요구 등 선택적으로만 ‘어머니(팬덤)’의
제안을 채택한다. 팬덤은 스스로를 ‘어머니’로 규정하지만 기획사 입장에서는 ‘어머니’가
아닌 ‘누나 고객님’으로 보는 것.
▶ ‘어머니’ 의견 구하지 않은 ‘가부장적 아버지’ JYP
2PM 사태도 같은 맥락에서 발생했다.
2009년 9월 재범의 과거 한국 비하 발언이 문제시 되자 JYP는 사건 발생 사흘
만에 재범의 자진 탈퇴를 알렸고 이틀 뒤 재범은 미국행 비행기에 올랐다. 재범의
탈퇴를 반대한 팬들이 공항에 운집하고 항의했지만 상황은 변하지 않았다.
이 교수는 "사적인 문제라면 팬덤(어머니)이 관리하게 두지만 공적인 문제로
대두되면 아버지(기획사)가 나선다. 이 때부터는 팬덤(어머니)의 의견은 무시당한다"며
"재범 사태는 이 틀 안에서 해석될 수 있으며 특히 JYP는 그 어떤 아버지보다
독단적인 ‘가부장적인 아버지’로 보인다"고 말했다.
또한 "재범 사건이 터졌을 때는 민족주의와 결합되는 바람에 사건이 커졌지만
실상 사건이라기보다는 ‘에피소드’에 가까웠던 만큼 팬들의 반응을 지켜보고 의견을
물었어야 한다"고 지적했다. 팬덤이 아이돌을 성장시켰으며 당시 사건으로 가장
상처받은 이들이 팬들인 만큼 이들의 의견과 양해를 구하는 과정이 있었어야 한다는
것.
그는 "JYP가 아이돌 그룹을 산업을 발전시키는 도구로밖에 생각하지 않은
것 같다"며 "기획사는 가수를 어린 시절부터 가족처럼 키우는데, JYP가
진정 재범을 ‘우리 가족’으로 생각했다면 쉽게 내치지 않았을 것"이라고 아쉬움을
표했다.
▶ 팬덤이 2PM을 버렸다? 2PM과 소속사가 팬덤을 버렸다?
JYP는 재범의 복귀 가능성을 열어 놓았다. 2PM은 정규 1집 제목을 2시에서 1분
모자란 ’1:59PM’으로 정하고 ‘재범은 영원한 리더’라고 강조하며 활동했다. 실제로도
JYP는 미국에 있는 재범에게 개인 트레이너를 붙여주는 등 복귀 준비를 하고 있었다고
밝혔다. 그러나 2월 25일 JYP는 재범의 영구 탈퇴와 전속 계약 해지를 공식화하고
27일 간담회를 가졌다.
정민우 씨는 "간담회 후로 팬덤 내부에 분열이 시작됐다"고 말했다.
간담회 전에는 재범의 영구 탈퇴를 멤버 6명이 동의하지 않았을 것이라는 ‘믿음’이
있었지만 간담회에서 멤버 모두가 재범의 탈퇴에 동의했다는 사실이 밝혀졌고 ‘믿음’이
깨졌다는 설명이다.
팬덤의 ‘믿음’은 ’2PM은 7명이다’ ‘멤버들 모두가 형제 같고 의리 있는 끈끈한
관계’라는 것이었다. 그는 "2PM의 짐승남 이미지도 근육 등 외적인 것 보다
의리, 형제애에 초점이 맞춰져 있었다"고 말했다. 그만큼 여섯 멤버가 재범의
탈퇴를 인정한 것은 큰 배신감으로 다가왔다는 것.
"간담회는 팬덤(어머니)에게 기획사(아버지)와 스타(아들)가 결국 한 편이었다는
사실을 알려준 자리였고 팬덤(어머니)은 더 이상 할 수 있는 일이 없다고 느꼈을
것"이라고 설명했다. 그렇기 때문에 "팬덤(어머니)이 스타(아들)를 버린
것이 아니라 스타(아들)와 기획사(아버지)가 팬덤(어머니)을 버렸다고도 볼 수 있다.
남은 멤버들의 사생활, 치부를 폭로하는 것은 버려진 어머니(팬덤)가 억울함을 호소하는
것으로 보여진다"고 해석했다.
대중음악평론가 김작가는 ‘스타(아들)-팬덤(엄마)-기획사(아빠)’라는 이 교수팀의
모델에 대해 "충분히 설득력이 있다"며 "JYP의 대응이 기본적으로
팬들을 무시하는 것처럼 보이기 때문에 팬덤 입장에서는 심리적 지분을 빼앗겼다는
박탈감이 심했을 것"이라고 말했다. 또 팬들의 변심에 대해 "산업적으로
보면 기획사가 절대 갑이지만 팬들은 스타를 갑으로 생각한다. ‘절대 갑’인 회사가
재범의 운명을 좌지우지 할 수 있다는, 인정하고 싶지 않았던 현실이 현실이 되면서
나타난 반발작용"으로 보인다고 해석했다.
이문원 대중문화평론가도 이 교수팀의 모델에 수긍하며 "팬덤이 스타를 ‘키워낸’
만큼 배신감도 심했을 것"이라고 말했다. 아이돌 팬덤의 진화과정에서 보면
"H.O.T 해체부터 팬들의 기획사에 대한 거부감은 높아지고 있었고, 2PM 사태는
팬들이 자신들의 의견이 받아들여지지 않아 거부감이 극에 달해 터진 것으로 보인다"는
설명이다.
▶ 안티스트 → 핫티스트 가능한 일?
‘핫티스트’에서 ‘안티스트’로 돌아선 2PM 팬덤은 다시 ‘핫티스트’로 돌아올 수
있을까.
정민우 씨는 "성장과 소멸을 반복한다는 팬덤의 특성상 일반적인 경우였다면
돌아설 수 있었을 것이다. 그러나 2PM 팬덤과 같이 내부 분열을 겪은 경우라면 힘들
것"이라고 말했다. 2PM 내부에서도 닉쿤, 택연 등 멤버 개개인을 좋아했던 팬들은
이번 사태를 겪으며 상실감이 적었고 지금도 팬으로 남아있는 경우가 많지만 ’7인조
2PM’을 좋아했던 팬들은 앞으로도 ‘안티스트’로 남을 것이라는 전망이다.
이문원 대중문화평론가도 "사랑이 미움으로 변하긴 쉽지만, 미움이 사랑으로
변하긴 어려울 것"이라며 의견을 같이 했다. 대중음악평론가 김작가 또한 "재범이
한국 비하 발언으로 미국으로 돌아갔을 때 팬들이 보인 시위는 애정의 표현으로 보였지만
지금 안티팬으로 돌아서는 것은 (소속사에 대한) 복수로 보인다"며 ‘핫티스트’로
돌아갈 가능성은 낮다고 말했다.
이나영 교수는 "JYP도 팬들의 이탈 현상은 예상했을 것"이라며 "남은
멤버를 추슬러 훌륭한 가수로 만들면 또 다른 팬이 생길 것이다. 단, 같은 실수를
되풀이하지 않기 위한 내부 성찰은 있어야 한다"고 강조했다.

지금 아이돌그룹이 1세대 아이돌만큼 수명이 길기는 힘들 것 같습니다. 수도 워낙 많고, 별다른 차별성도 안 보이고… 그래서 그런지 현역 활동 중이면서 연기자의 영역에 어찌나 발들을 걸쳐두는지 정석으로 연기자의 길을 노크하는 배우들에세 민폐가 되고 있죠.
